Rapper of the Week - Gangstarr
DJ Premier & Guru started Gang Starr in the late 80's when they dropped their jazzy debut album in 1989
on Wild Pitch. The album didn't impress many and so the duo returned stronger with a new label and a new sound for their second
album, released on Noo Trybe in 1991. Gang Starr's superb lyrics and recolutionary beats turned the duo into an overnight
success. DJ Premier became one of the most sought after producers in New York. Gang Starr relased their third album a year
later, impressing the streets as well as the critics. Gang Starr remained a cult favorite as they dropped their fourth album
in 1994. After a four year hiatus, Gang Starr retuned in 1998 to drop their fifth album, proving that they could still be
a successful group. The group took a rest from Gang Starr as Guru continued to release solo albums and Premier continued to
produce tracks. Five years later, Gang Starr returned with a Virgin contract in 2003 for their latest project 'The Ownerz'.
